El Lobo, the wolf of the Southwest, was nearly exterminated by people who did not know
or appreciate its significance as the top predator in a complex food web. Under the Endangered Species Act, people finally stepped up to save it from complete extinction, and its howls now grace the nights of its mountainous habitat in eastern Arizona and western New Mexico.
